P$5 Exploratory Physical Education
(9th year
students]
Exploratory
Physical Education (10th year students)
A basic
required course for incoming 9th and 10th year students, designed to introduce
students to fundamental skills in a variety of physical activities, including
team sports, individual sports, body conditioning and physical fitness,
lifetime activities and dance. The goals of this course include giving students
an opportunity to develop basic skills and interests, thereby enabling students
to make selections of courses offered in subsequent semesters. Provision is made for fundamental skill
development, strategy learning and intramural tournament play.

Education (10th year students)
A one semester
required course that students take as either incoming 9th or 10th graders. The curriculum covers many areas of vital
importance to maintaining one's good health and developing a healthy lifestyle:
use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, mental health,
AIDS
and other diseases, family living and sex education, nutrition.
P$D Dance
Students will be exposed to dances
from many nations. After being taught
the steps to these dances, students will be able to perform them in groups from
memory. Basic locomotor
and axial movement will be taught, as well
as other dance fundamentals. Activities
to develop physical fitness and condition the body so the students can properly
perform,
are an essential part of the program. This class also affords the students
opportunities for creative expression and exposure to a vital art form.
P$L Lifetime Sports
A course designed to teach the skills
of and give practice in the following lifetime sports: bowling, golf,
shuffleboard, handball, table tennis to name a few. The objectives are to provide recreational
pursuits and to develop sportsmanlike attitudes one can use throughout a
lifetime.
P$A Aerobics & Pilates – New Course for Fall
2004
A course designed to improve
cardio-respiratory function, and at the same time tone up muscles, improve
coordination, agility, balance and rhythmic movement through a series of
aerobic exercises. Routines will vary
from the simple to the more strenuous and will be
done to music. Students perform routines from memory and
have the opportunity to work in groups to create their own aerobic routines.
P$S Slimnastics
A course designed to help any student
develop and maintain an attractive, healthy body. It emphasizes weight control
through exercises, body conditioning and sound nutritional habits. Stress is
placed on learning and practicing habits and attitudes, which will lead to
optimum physical fitness. Included in
the curriculum are: jogging/walking, rope jumping, calisthenics, use of hand
and bar weights, weight machines, rowing machines and exercise bikes.
P$V Volleyball
A course stressing the learning and
practice of the fundamental and more advanced skills of volleyball and
volleyball officiating. Provision is
made for skill development, strategy learning, practice of refereeing skills
and intramural tournament play.
PE
5 PE Class For
Students Finished with Art and Music
A
course for students who have finished music and art. For 10 weeks the students are in the
gymnasium and for the other 10 weeks the students leave early, come to school
late, or are assigned to Study Hall or and internship. The curriculum varies.
P$T Team Sports
This is a
course for 10th graders who were in the school in the 9th grade. It stresses
the learning and practice of skills fundamental to the following team
sports: basketball, softball,
volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, and team handball.
Provision
is made for skill development, learning strategy and intramural tournament
play.
P$M Medically Excused
A course
designed for students, who because of their medical condition, cannot
participate in the regular physical education program. Medical documentation is required. A special medical form is given to students
to be filled out by their doctors and returned to the school.
YPA Adapted Physical Education
A course
designed for our Physically Challenged students. The course consists of activities that are
adapted for the students where necessary.
Some special equipment has been purchased for this class.
