The standard science curriculum at Murry Bergtraum High School consists of three years science with the opportunity of four years of science instruction for qualified students. Course offerings in science include Regents courses in Living Environment, Physical Setting, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics and Advanced Placement Environmental Science. IN the fall of 2003, a non-Regents science course entitle Marine Biology/Oceanography will also be offered. In all courses the Laboratory is an integral feature of science instruction. All science students participate in two laboratory periods per week that is integrated into the course.  Murry Bergtraum also offers a Science Research Program with the Mt. Sinai Hospital for selected students.

School trips integrate the resources of New York City. Self-guided tours of American Museum of Natural History include a "treasure hunt" for our chemistry students, Human Biology and Biodiversity self-guided tours for our Biology students and a Hall of Planet Earth self-guided tours and the Rose Center exploration four our Earth Science students. Prospect Park serves as a field research center for the Advanced Placement Environmental Science Class. In the fall of 2003, our Marine Biology students will utilize the Coney Island aquarium and the South Street Seaport.

Extracurricular activities include an extensive program of enrichment through BMCC's Science and Technology Program, as well as Teachers College/Columbia University’s Institute for Learning Technologies, Hunter College Biology program, city College’s biology and Engineering laboratory and City College’s Saturday Enrichment Program.

Department members are extensively involved in staff development. This includes after school workshops sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Manhattan High Schools, in-house technology workshops and science teaching strategies, professional organization conferences and college courses.  Science teachers have been accepted to Hunter College’s Biotechnology and Columbia University’s summer programs.  Additional programs include Brooklyn College, Baruch college, Mercy College, and the College of saint Rose.
