School Year 2004-2005

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome all new students and welcome back current students.

The Deans' office works with the school administration and school safety to ensure a safe learning environment.

Therefore, it is imperative that all students abide by the school Code of Behavior distributed at the start of each school year. Please see links on Home page to NYC DEPARTMENT of EDUCATION'S CITYWIDE STANDARDS of CONDUCT and UNIFORM DISCIPLINARY MEASURES. Students and their parents should discuss the importance of following school regulations.

It is important to emphasize certain items:
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED ITEMS
All weapons and dangerous instruments are strictly prohibited from school. This includes all types of firearms, all knives, razor blades, box cutters, even if used at work, and fireworks. Any students found to be in possession of such will be subject to disciplinary and possible criminal action.
Cell phones beepers and electronic communication devices cannot be displayed nor used inside the school building. Students are not permitted to leave the building during the day and then return. NYPD and School Truancy patrol the perimeter of the building and will pick up students not attending school.
SAFEGUARD PERSONAL BELONGINGS
Please make every effort to safeguard your belongings.Always check that you have all of your belongings before you leave a room. In the caferteria, place your bookbags in front of you. Coats, jackets and other outer garments need to be secured in assigned lockers. Don't become a "Locker Target". Do not allow friends to share your locker. The more students that know your combination, the greater the chances of having items taken. Lock your lock, spin it and give it a pull to make sure it is completely locked. All students must wear their school photo ID badges and present their program schedules to any staff if requested.
BEHAVIOR AND DRESS CODE
All students who attend Murry Bergtraum are expected to dress appropriately and behave in a mature business-like manner. A student, whose behavior interferes with the orderly operation of the school, endangers the health and safety of others, or causes damage to property will receive disciplinary points. The school maintains a proper and accurate record of infractions and points.

Students who accumulate 10 or more disciplinary points and/or have excessive cuts will be recommended for a Pre-suspension Intervention Conference with their parent/guardian and guidance counselor/grade advisor. The academic and disciplinary records will be discussed.

If a student continues to accrue disciplinary points or commits a serious infraction, he/she will be recommended for suspension from classes. Suspended students must remain in the, Discipline Education Center during the entire length of their suspension. They will be expected to complete work which will be sent from their classes, take any exams given and complete a Suspension Learning Packet appropriate for their infraction.

Students who do not return with their parent/guardian for the post-suspension conference must remain in the Discipline Education Center until a conference is held. At the conference, the student will sign a contract, be placed on probation for a minimum of two weeks and will be given a letter of return to show their teachers.

It is hoped that suspended students make the correct choices in the future and avoid any further disciplinary action.

Students are encouraged to visit the Deans' Office in room 235 if they have any concerns or problems. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of the Conflict Resolution Program in room 417. The Lost and Found can also be found in room 235. Unclaimed items are donated to charities at the end of each month.

Have a safe and productive school year.
